This article explains how an authorized user can manually create and restore backups for the psi.edu WordPress site in Cloudways.

Creating a Manual Backup

Create a manual backup before WordPress updates, deployments, database changes, large content changes, or troubleshooting that could affect production.

  1. Log in to Cloudways. Use your individual team-member account.
  2. Open the psi.edu application. On the left sidebar, hover over Flexible and then select Applications. Then choose the application psi.edu in the list.
  3. Open Backup and Restore. On the application page on the left sidebar, select Backup and Restore.
  4. Start the backup. Click Take Backup Now.
  5. Wait for completion. Cloudways will display a notification when the backup finishes. Confirm that Last Backup Date shows the new backup time before making any changes.

Restoring a Backup

  1. Open Backup and Restore. On the left sidebar, hover over Flexible and then select Applications. Then choose the application psi.edu in the list.
  2. Choose a restore point. Select the backup you wish to restore to. Cloudways displays restore-point times in UTC.
  3. Click Restore Application Now. Cloudways will ask which part of the application to restore.
  4. Confirm the restore. Select the appropriate option, click Proceed, and wait for Cloudways to report completion.
  5. Check psi.edu. Open the site and confirm that the homepage, WordPress administrator area, pages, posts, images, people, projects, search, and forms are working as expected.

Choosing the Correct Restore Option

  • Complete Restore — restores both the web files and the database.
  • Web Files — restores public_html and private_html without changing the database.
  • Database — restores the database without changing the web files.

Undoing a Restore

Cloudways creates a temporary backup immediately before a restore. If the restore causes a problem, return to Backup and Restore and select Rollback. Rollback reverses only the part restored—for example, a database rollback reverses the database restore but not the web files.

Cloudways says that this temporary rollback backup is automatically removed after 24 hours if it is not deleted sooner.

If Backup or Restore Is Unavailable

  • Verify that you selected the PSI production server and the www.psi.edu application.
  • Ask the Cloudways account owner to confirm your team-member permissions.
  • If Cloudways reports an error, use Need a Hand → Send us a Message to contact Cloudways Support, if your account has support access.
